Tsuyoi Philosophy

Karate and martial arts have enjoyed much success nowadays with the martial arts featured on the television, films, books, newspapers and the internet. Although our schools welcome positive publicity and media exposure, we feel that Tsuyoi Karate should respect it's Japanese history and culture and to ensure that Tsuyoi Karate remains a budo art (a true martial art), ensuring that karate becomes a way of life and instils respect and discipline which will stay with students for years to come.

Karate at national and international has become very competitive both within amateur and professional sport with the traditional aspects being lost simply because a trophy or reward can be won. Although competition karate plays an important role, the sport aspect is not a true reflection on what is achievable within karate as a martial art and Tsuyoi Karate continues to teach and practice traditional values that will ensure that karate becomes a way of life and for the true martial art rewards to be gained and engrained in a persons normal daily life.

Tsuyoi Ryu exponents develops students mentally and physically and strives to students to seek a high standards of morals which will allow them to make a contribution their family life, work place, school place and to society generally. This is the true essence of Tsuyoi Ryu.

Although Tsuyoi Ryu means 'powerful or strong' this should not be regarded simply as a physical charactistic. Indeed, is should also be reflective in character building as well as mental development.

Tsuyoi Ryu seeks to develop the character of students and to bring them on within a friendly and respectful environment. Karate is not about beating people up, fighting to hurt people but rather the opposite.

Shihan Joe Ellis asks a question to students when he travels around the world. It goes something like this;

"If I told you to go and do karate on that elderly person trying to cross the road, what would you do?"

The common answers are:

1. I would not do karate on that elderly person.
2. Must not use karate outside of the training hall at all.

Joe was hoping for something like:

"I would use my karate on that elderly person and help her. Because karate teaches us respect and social responsibilty".

Tsuyoi Ryu Karate is about:

* Learning authentic Japanese karate as a budo art.
* Self discipline.
* Self improvement.
* Self respect.
* Developing mentally.
* Achieving and maintaining moral values.
* Improving life.
* Social responsibilty.
